This bolus is then swallowed and guided down the esophagus via a quick visit through the pharynx, which serves as an intersection for both the digestive and respiratory pathways.

The Esophagus and Stomach: Key Players in Digestion

Once in the esophagus, the bolus undertakes a muscular journey towards the stomach. This muscular tube acts as a conveyor belt, using waves of contractions called peristalsis to move the food down. Upon reaching the stomach, the bolus meets a highly acidic environment. The stomach, a muscular and flexible organ, churns the food, mixing it thoroughly with gastric juices. These juices contain enzymes and acids necessary for breaking down complex food molecules into simpler components.

The Small and Large Intestine: Completing the Journey

Transitioning from the stomach, the partially digested food enters the small intestine, a misnomer derived from its diameter, not its impressively lengthy structure. Despite being thinner than the large intestine, the small intestine can measure up to 7 meters, providing a vast surface area for absorption processes. Here, the liver and pancreas play vital supporting roles. The liver produces bile, stored in the gallbladder and released into the small intestine to emulsify fats, while the pancreas secretes enzymes that further break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into their component nutrients.

As the transformation from food to nutrients finalizes, the nutrients pass through the walls of the small intestine and enter the bloodstream.
